This study found that apolipoprotein A-I (apoA-I) binds and inhibits the antibacterial and cytotoxic activity of human cathelicidin LL-37 in plasma. The binding provides a mechanism for regulating LL-37 activity in the bloodstream, preventing systemic toxicity while allowing local antimicrobial action at sites of infection.
