In this experimental atherosclerosis study, hypercholesterolemic rabbits treated with thymosin alpha-1 showed significantly reduced plasma and erythrocyte lipid peroxide levels. Most strikingly, in thymosin alpha-1-treated animals, lipid plaques in blood vessels were replaced by fibrous tissue, suggesting regression of atherosclerotic lesions. The anti-atherosclerotic effect appears to involve normalization of blood lipid levels and protection of endothelial cells against free radical injury, indicating thymosin alpha-1 may have therapeutic potential for atherosclerosis.
