Rat study using continuous subcutaneous MOTS-c infusion (0.1 µmol/24h via micro-osmotic pump) to examine adrenal cortex physiology, finding that MOTS-c primes adrenal metabolic pathways through AMPK and mTOR signaling without directly stimulating steroidogenesis or cortisol secretion. Establishes that MOTS-c's adrenal role is metabolic conditioning rather than direct hormone production. Provides the first characterization of MOTS-c's function in adrenal physiology—revealing a 'steroidogenic readiness' role that prepares adrenocortical cells for stress responses without constitutively elevating glucocorticoids, with implications for stress physiology and adrenal insufficiency research.
