Muscle wasting (sarcopenia) in aging is closely tied to falling NAD+ levels, which impair mitochondria and cause muscle cells to enter a senescent (aged, non-functional) state. Researchers engineered a hydrogel microsphere that carries NMN (a NAD+ precursor) alongside SS-31 peptide for mitochondrial targeting and releases them gradually into muscle tissue. In aged mice, the treatment restored mitochondrial energy metabolism, reduced cellular senescence, and improved muscle mass and function.
