Computer simulations of biological membranes showed that the peptide elamipretide increases the electrical capacitance of mitochondrial membranes, effectively reducing the voltage stress they experience. This protective effect was more pronounced when the lipid cardiolipin was present alongside the peptide. The findings provide a molecular-level explanation for how elamipretide stabilizes mitochondrial membranes and may prevent damage from excessive electrical stress.
