Acute kidney injury, a serious condition with high death rates, is closely tied to mitochondrial breakdown inside kidney cells. The peptide SS-31 has shown strong protective effects in lab and animal models of kidney injury, partly through a newly identified protein called PLSCR3 that helps maintain healthy mitochondria. Despite encouraging results, challenges around drug delivery and dosing still need to be resolved before these therapies reach patients.
