Adding the peptide elamipretide to the solution used to freeze rooster sperm significantly improved sperm quality after thawing — at the optimal concentration of 9 micromoles per liter, motility, membrane integrity, and mitochondrial activity all increased substantially. The peptide worked by reducing oxidative damage and boosting antioxidant enzyme activity during the freezing process. This offers a practical way to improve outcomes in poultry breeding programs that rely on sperm cryopreservation.
