The peptide SS-31 protected the lungs of mice from fibrosis caused by bleomycin — a drug widely used to model the scarring lung disease pulmonary fibrosis. SS-31 reduced the accumulation of collagen and inflammatory markers, preserved mitochondrial structure and energy production, and limited oxidative damage and cell death in lung tissue. These findings identify SS-31 as a potential protective therapy against the mitochondrial damage that underlies pulmonary fibrosis.
