Scar sarcoidosis, where old scars become inflamed as part of the systemic disease sarcoidosis, was present in about 6% of a large patient cohort and typically appeared at the very start of the disease. While it is a useful early warning sign for diagnosis, the analysis of 42 patients found it does not predict a more serious or prolonged disease course. Foreign bodies were found in the majority of biopsied scar lesions, confirming that foreign material in scars often triggers this reaction.
