A new type of nanoparticle was created by combining the anti-inflammatory peptide KPV with the drug rapamycin, which promotes cellular cleanup processes. The two compounds self-assembled into stable nanoparticles without needing a separate carrier material, and in both cell and animal studies they significantly reduced vascular calcification — the hardening of blood vessel walls linked to heart disease. The results point to a promising drug-free carrier approach for treating a condition that currently has no approved therapies.
