Using mouse models of non-small cell lung cancer, this study demonstrated that the structural protein vimentin is essential for tumor growth and spread to the lungs. Mice lacking functional vimentin had smaller tumors, better survival, and cancer cells that could not metastasize — and a drug called withaferin A, which disrupts vimentin structure, produced similar results when given therapeutically. The mechanism involves vimentin protecting cancer cells from a form of iron-dependent cell death called ferroptosis.
