Tests thymosin β4 protection against ethanol-induced injury in human corneal stromal keratocytes. Ethanol (used in LASEK/surface ablation eye surgery) damaged keratocytes with increased ROS, apoptosis, and reduced viability. TB4 pretreatment dose-dependently preserved keratocyte viability, reduced ROS, and protected against apoptosis in vitro and in mouse corneal stroma in vivo. Practical significance: TB4 eye drops could reduce corneal keratocyte damage during surface ablation surgical procedures.
