After photochemically induced stroke in rats, a key protein that protects the brain by supporting mitochondria, blood vessel growth, and new connections (PGC-1α) was significantly suppressed. Both Semax and the drug Mexidol preserved neuron numbers, prevented this suppression, and increased markers of brain recovery in the area surrounding the damage over 21 days. This study identifies PGC-1α activation as one possible mechanism behind the neuroprotective effects of these treatments.
