Chronic restraint stress in rats disrupted the balance of gut bacteria, reducing beneficial species and increasing opportunistic ones. Semax at doses of 50 and 150 µg/kg prevented these stress-driven shifts in gut microbiome composition. The protective effect appears to operate through the brain as well as through direct interaction with intestinal melanocortin receptors.
