Identifies purinergic signaling as a downstream mechanism for thymosin β4-stimulated corneal epithelial cell migration. TB4's known interaction with F0-F1 ATP synthase was investigated alongside extracellular ATP release and P2 purinergic receptor activation in human corneal epithelial cells. TB4 stimulated ATP release that activated purinergic receptors to drive epithelial migration. Establishes an ATP→purinergic receptor cascade as a novel mechanism through which TB4 promotes corneal wound healing—a signaling pathway separate from its direct actin-sequestering function.
