This groundbreaking study showed that MOTS-c, a mitochondrial DNA-encoded peptide, translocates to the nucleus in response to metabolic stress to regulate nuclear gene expression. This represents the first demonstration of a mitochondrial genome-encoded factor actively controlling the nuclear genome, revealing a bi-genomic communication mechanism between mitochondria and the nucleus.
