In rats of different ages, the peptide Pinealon improved spatial learning performance in the Morris water maze more effectively than Cortexin, particularly in older animals. The effects were associated with regional changes in caspase-3 activity, an enzyme involved in programmed cell death, in different brain areas. The results suggest that the brain's caspase-3 status partly determines an animal's capacity to learn and that Pinealon can favorably shift this.
