Clones and characterizes thymosin β4 (ChTβ4) from Crassostrea hongkongensis, the Hong Kong oyster, finding its expression in hemocytes (bivalve immune cells) is upregulated by bacterial challenge. Functional knockdown reduced bacterial clearance; recombinant ChTβ4 enhanced hemocyte antimicrobial activity. The conserved LKKTET actin-binding motif was present in ChTβ4. Extends TB4's conserved innate immunity and wound healing roles to marine bivalve molluscs—adding economically important oyster species to the comparative thymosin β4 biology dataset.
