This study evaluated thymic function in 94 people exposed to the environmental toxin TCDD (dioxin) by measuring thymosin alpha-1 levels. The exposed group had significantly lower serum thymosin alpha-1 compared to 105 unexposed controls (977 vs. 1,149 pg/mL), with a dose-response relationship showing further decreases with longer residence in the contaminated area. However, thymosin alpha-1 levels did not correlate with other immune function measures, leaving the clinical significance uncertain. The findings suggest TCDD may impair thymic secretory function.
