The peptide Pinealon (Glu-Asp-Arg) reduced inflammation and promoted new neuron growth in the brains of old rats experiencing acute oxygen deprivation. In the same model, Cortexin reduced the brain's tendency to undergo programmed cell death but did not normalize the inflammatory marker interleukin-6. Both peptides improved survival outcomes, but through partly different mechanisms.
