This study identified a novel 62-69 kDa neuroendocrine antigen using monoclonal antibody 1D4, which marked a unique subset of thymic medullary epithelial cells distinct from those producing thymosin alpha-1. The 1D4+ cells were stellate-shaped, Ia-positive, and did not react with thymosin alpha-1 antisera. The same antigen was shared by subsets of anterior pituitary and thyroid neuroendocrine cells, suggesting shared differentiation pathways between immune system epithelial cells and neuroendocrine cells.
