After surgically inducing strokes in both frontal lobes of rats, both Semax and antibodies to glutamate (AB-Glu) were given intranasally and compared for neuroprotective and memory-sparing effects. Both treatments reduced the volume of brain damage and preserved the rats' ability to recall a learned avoidance response that was trained before the stroke. The results suggest that intranasal delivery of both compounds offers comparable neuroprotection against this type of frontal cortex injury.
