Using immunohistochemistry, this study mapped the distribution of prothymosin alpha (the precursor of thymosin alpha-1) and parathymosin in rat thymus and spleen. Prothymosin alpha was found in lymphoid cells of both organs, with stronger staining in the thymic cortex and splenic germinal centers. Parathymosin showed a distinct pattern, localizing mainly in thymic medullary reticuloepithelial cells and splenic reticular cells, while thymocytes were negative. The findings suggest these peptides have broader roles beyond traditional immune system hormone functions.
