A panel of nootropic drugs was screened for direct binding activity at glutamate receptors, which are central to learning and memory. Semax showed moderate competition at metabotropic glutamate receptors, while two other compounds (nooglutil and noopept) acted mainly at AMPA receptors, and dimebon at NMDA receptors. Drugs like piracetam had no measurable effect at any glutamate receptor, suggesting that some nootropics work through glutamate pathways and others do not.
