Semax improved both learning and pain tolerance in rats when injected into the abdomen, but only improved learning - not pain sensitivity - when given through the nose. The different outcomes depending on route of administration suggest that the memory-enhancing and pain-relieving properties of Semax involve distinct brain structures and mechanisms. Intranasal delivery appears more potent for cognitive effects at equivalent doses.
