This study identified thymosin alpha-1 in MCF-7 breast cancer cells, detected using reverse-phase HPLC followed by radioimmunoassay. The peptide was found in both culture supernatants and cytosol preparations of cells grown in thymosin-free media. Immunofluorescence localized thymosin alpha-1 within the cytoplasm. Combined with previous findings, these results support the hypothesis that thymosin alpha-1 may function as an autocrine growth factor for MCF-7 breast cancer cells.
