Photochemical damage to the prefrontal cortex in rats caused lasting spatial memory deficits measurable three weeks after injury in a water maze. Daily intranasal Semax for six days immediately after the injury led to full recovery of learning ability. The long-lasting benefit - seen well after dosing had stopped - points to Semax triggering sustained neuroprotective and neurotrophic processes rather than simply acting as a short-term stimulant.
