This study found that topical KPV significantly accelerated corneal epithelial wound healing in rabbits. After mechanical corneal abrasion, KPV-treated eyes achieved complete re-epithelialization in 100% of cases by 60 hours, compared to none in placebo-treated eyes. The wound-healing effect was mediated by nitric oxide, as the NOS inhibitor L-NAME blocked KPV's beneficial effects. In vitro, KPV also stimulated rabbit corneal epithelial cell viability at micromolar concentrations. These findings suggest KPV promotes corneal healing through an NO-dependent mechanism.
