Researchers demonstrated that thymosin alpha-1 can stimulate bone marrow blood cell production in both healthy mice and mice bearing T-cell lymphoma. In healthy mice, the peptide boosted bone marrow cell proliferation and colony formation, effects that were further enhanced by colony-stimulating factors. In tumor-bearing mice whose bone marrow function was suppressed by cancer, thymosin alpha-1 treatment restored normal blood cell production, suggesting it could help counteract the bone marrow suppression commonly seen in cancer patients.
